Abstract

The research project aims to update the cultural and social, as well as economic, value of publishing products of small circulation, in a contemporary context in which an interest for the recovery of craftsmanship and manual skills has emerged, almost as a natural counterpoint, "mass" production allowed by digital printing technologies. An interest that, in the last years, has led to the rediscovery of techniques, tools, and machinery for letterpress composition, limited series of paper production, etc. In short, the "renaissance" of letterpress, which allows a customization of products valued for the material, aesthetic and sensorial quality of their components. At the same time the project intends to put under new light the tradition of printing that in the Veneto region boasts histories of extraordinary companies, dating back to the fifteenth century, not only for the work of celebrated printers-publishers like Aldo Manuzio but also for setting up productive "supply chains" such as that of paper to printing press. In order to bring out the social and cultural value of the technical and entrepreneurial ability of the past and to make the related knowledge more accessible --for study as well as commercial and entrepreneurial purposes-- theories, systems and technologies for digital archiving will be applied to the valorization of archives. This will allow, on the one hand, to the organization and conservation of memory, and, on the other, to the effective availability of such assets, transformed into digital databases, to cultural and technological transfer to a wider audience. On this transformation, from analogue to digital, the possibility of proposing new models of business organization and business development fields is based. The research project therefore presents a network of actors who, in various ways and with different skills, have chosen the strategy of quality, and acts towards strengthening the interdependence of the sectors involved. It aims at an impact on the professional profiles that allow to connect a set of actors whose specialized skills need to be supported through the integration of different knowledge and profiles.
