A digital archive for the collection of images of typefaces used by letterpress printers operating in the city of São Paulo between 1827 and 1927. It also includes information about type founders and distributors that were active in the city during this period, addresses of printers and suppliers, and notes on the people who worked there.
This website brings together the results of an investigation into graphic memory and print culture, focusing on the first 100 years of printing with movable type in the city of São Paulo (1827-1927). The main objective of this research is to arrive at a better understanding of the identity of the city through a systematic examination of the visual characteristics of the printed artefacts that circulated within it. Methods include the identification and spatial location of letterpress printers, and the re-creation of their typographic repertoires following reference to the printed material they produced.
More than 370 letterpress printers have been identified. Their addresses, as well as those of related companies such as type foundries and distributors have been mapped within the city's urban fabric, and along a timeline. The names of the people who worked in these companies, as well as lists of publications produced by them, have also been compiled.
Results of the research can also be found in the website of the exhibition Tipografia Paulistana: os primeiros 100 anos de impressão na cidade de São Paulo (São Paulo city letterpress: the first 100 years of printing in São Paulo city).
