Keywords: letterpress, print culture, nineteenth centuryBegin: 2013 | End: 2017
Abstract
The object of study of this research project are the typefaces available for typesetting and printing with movable type in the city of São Paulo between the nineteenth and the early twentieth century. The time frame is bounded by the 100 years following the release date of what is considered the first outcome of a printing office in the then province of São Paulo (the newspaper O Farol Paulistano, 1827), and its closure, therefore, coincides with the time at which printing with movable type was gradually replaced by the use of composing machines like linotype.
It is intended, at first, to identify and map the main users (typographic workshops) and suppliers (importers, distributors, manufacturers) of movable type in São Paulo this period, and then select and describe the letterforms most used, aiming at an understanding of the formation of a certain repertoire or 'typographic taste' in São Paulo over the years. With this, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of São Paulo graphic language in the period, and to a deeper knowledge on the role of type manufacturers, distributors and users in São Paulo city during the nineteenth century.
