Typographic Landscapes: Advanced studies of letters in the urban environment

Abstract
This project aims to deepen and broaden the scope of investigations initiated in previous research, in which the main object of study were São Paulo city architectural epigraphs —signatures of architects, engineers and constructors found in the historic center of the city of São Paulo. In order to accomplish this, we start from a definition of 'typographic landscape' as the set of verbal-visual inscriptions found in urban centers, from the most official and perennial to the most spontaneous and ephemeral, regardless of their mode of production (printing, lettering or handwriting). Such inscriptions are, in this context, understood as landmarks and visual references of the city and of its history and memory, with implications for the establishment of collective identities and a sense of place. The project aims to apply the procedures developed for the survey and analysis of São Paulo City typographic landscape, to different space-time settings in order to compare the data already obtained with that from other urban centers. We intend to draw general conclusions about the presence of letters in the urban space, taking into account, in addition to the verbal information contained in the texts, also the techniques for obtaining the inscriptions, their formal features, and the meanings assigned to them by different agents. Among the expected results, are updating of the website 'São Paulo City Epigraphic Archive', writing of scientific papers, supervision of theses and dissertations, and the preparation of a book on the subject.
