Graphic memory and cultural heritage: the legacy of typography and lettering
Keywords: typography, lettering, graphic design, graphic memory, design history, heritageBegin: 2023
Abstract
This research project focuses on typography and lettering as elements of graphic memory, and their role as cultural assets that deserve patrimonialization. Its results should contribute to studies on heritage, and in particular on design heritage, by offering parameters to better assess, interpret, present and represent the presence of typography and lettering, or practices related to them, in tangible and intangible assets listed or to be listed as heritage. It should also contribute to giving value to old local professional practices, stimulating the activation of the production chain in the field of visual design, graphic arts and publishing, based on a renewed sense of identity and self-esteem. It is, therefore, an investigation that, based on basic research, with a historical profile, should generate results capable of contributing to generating chains of innovative products, processes and services in the sphere of communication, publishing, the creative industry, and the design in a broad sense. The project's specific objectives involve improving the databases linked to the Tipografia Paulistana platform and the Typographic Landscapes website, expanding their potential to function as inventories of typographic heritage; the identification and description of criteria for the evaluation, interpretation, presentation and representation of the legacy of typography and lettering for cultural heritage; and the dissemination of examples of ancient practices and manifestations of typography and lettering that have the potential to stimulate innovation.
